Once upon a time Visby was one of the great cities of medieval Europe, famed for its wealth and strategic power. The Vikings were here as early as the sixth century and opened lucrative trade routes to Byzantium and western Asia. A walk along Strandgatan is the best place to view the impressive merchants houses. Nearby are the lush Botanical Gardens and the "Maidens Tower" where a local goldsmiths daughter is said to have been walled up alive for betraying the city to the Danes.

- Visby houses a beautiful botanical garden. It's a place to relax after a day exploring the old town
- Did you know that the movies with Pippi Longstocking was filmed in Visby? Several movies were filmed in the idyllic streets of Visby. Pippi Longstockings colourful house Villa Villekulla is today an exciting museum for kids to explore
- A defense wall with more than 50 towers surrounds the old stone houses and churches. The ring wall is about 3.5 kilometers long and 11 meters of height and within the wall are the ruins of 23 churches and abbeys

Shopping
Within the wall, there are large numbers of small shops, restaurants, pubs and clubs, many of which keep open all year round. Visby's most well known shopping street is Adelsgatan.

The unit of currency in Sweden is the Krona (SEK). Traveler's checks and credit cards are also widely used and accepted here.
